Describe specifically the reason for the discussion.

Express your concern about the area of performance you would like improved.

Describe the impact the performance problem has on you and others.

Acknowledge and listen to the other person.

Seek the person’s opinion on ways to improve performance.

Discuss solutions.

(If you only want the hard facts, go directly to the end of this post, please)

On an early, rainy Saturday morning in 2010, a small group of adventurous and fearless Toastmasters started a journey. A journey, which lead them past the borders of our realm, past strong streams, devil dragons, long ladders and giant speaking trees. But thanks to their fellowship and support (who thought that you need a 65l backpack on a two day trip?), we have been rewarded with a treasure of “high altitude speeches”, splendid “Brotzeit” and a fun time.

Time to repeat the journey!!

This time we are setting into the direction of the “Gufferthütte“, which is located in the beautiful realm of Rofan / Austria. This time, we are going to saddle our steel horses and leave our save village after sunrise on September 1st at 8am. After a journey and a 2-hours-hike (800m altitude) we will reach the residence of Queen Petra and King Thomas. They agreed to grant us one of their most impressive “seminar”-rooms, where we will hold our second Mountain Club Afternoon to impress the mountain spirits with our verbal appraisals.

If everything goes well and the spirits are in good mood, we are going to leave the castle of Petra and Thomas on Sunday, September 2nd, at around 10am.

Here the hard facts:

Departure: 01.09.12, 8 am (by cars)

Return: 02.09.12, approx. 6pm

location: Gufferthütte (Austria)

Hiking duration: 2 hours

Rooms: 2-, 4-, 6-bed-rooms

Costs: 20,- EUR (night), 10,- EUR (members of Deutscher Alpenverein)

Advance payment: 10,- €

Food: either à la carte or half-board (24,50 EUR)

3-hours club meeting on 1475m (place your speech requests and fun ideas!)

smaller hiking tours (depending on the weather)

Equipment: rain proof gear, backpack, appropiate shoes (hiking boots), snacks, Toastmaster manuals, “Hüttenschlafsack” (mandatory!!), games, …

Registration: president@club.munich-toastmasters.de

Please register including the advance payment as soon as possible, because Petra and Thomas provide accommodation on a first-come-first-served basis.

Our new “Speech Study Group” has taken off successfully! Be inspired – and why not join?
Read the account of Paul, our energetic Sergeant-at-Arms:

Being a student at the TU University, having a job at an engineering office 20h/week, playing volleyball twice a week and meeting friends at the weekend marginalized my time to work on the CC projects. There is always something else – apparently more important – to do when it comes to think of a new speech: I need to tidy up first, I need to learn for the next seminar, I need to run now and there’s not enough time to sit down for a speech anyway… The list of excuses goes on and on.

There are several reasons that hold me back from composing a speech. My priorities towards TM change over time. Or I am missing the euphoria as at the beginning of the CC and now struggle in thinking of new inspiring speeches. Or I just get stuck with my daily life.

To get me back on track to the completion of the CC, our President of the Club initiated a voluntarily Speech Study Group to meet – preferably every second Sunday – at some public place like a café in order to work on our speech projects. This includes
•	to think about possible speech topics
•	to do brainstorming in a group on projects
•	to get feedback on your ideas
•	to do the first steps towards your speech
•	to set yourself a goal as when to complete the speech
•	to take your time and just work on your project

To find an appropriate café or public room is yet a problem to be solved. But we’ve already got some good suggestions. The Kick-Off meeting took place at our President’s house. Last time we met at a café first but quickly noticed that it was too noisy there. So we changed to a session room at the TU University. Who knows where we are going to meet next time? In any case all members of Munich Toastmasters are invited to join the Speech Study Group to consistently work on their respective projects. Look out for the Speech Study invitations or just give me a note of attendance at sata@club.munich-toastmasters.de.

Paul
